Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico - Oaxaca (wuh-HAH-ca), one of the safest states in Mexico, is known as the culinary and cultural hub of Mexico. With its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, Oaxaca City offers the country's most vibrant arts and crafts scene, specializing in pottery and textiles. Oaxaca is also known for its indigenous people (mostly Azpotecs and Mixtecs) and their cuisine which is unique due to the relative geographic isolation of its peoples, and the climates in which foods are produced. Oaxaca's gastronomy is especially known for its seven moles, Oaxaca tamales in banana leaves, and mescal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic center of Oaxaca City and the Archaeological Site of Monte Albán, will give you an experience to remember!

SATURDAY 19

We arrive in Oaxaca and go directly to our home for the week, called "Casa Nai - Art House", a newly remodeled house created to delight you with the art of Oaxacan artists. The house has 7 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms. It is a very safe neighborhood and just a 12 minute walk to the temple of Santo Domingo and the best area of restaurants and bars. Upon arrival, we will be treated to an authentic Oaxacan meal prepared and served by a local chef.

SUNDAY, APRIL 20

We'll start the day with a free morning to sleep in or go exploring. At 12:00, we'll gather at "El Llano" Park to journey to the heart of the Zapotec community. We'll dive into the natural fibers workshop where you'll be provided with the tools to learn how to hand-spin yarn, and wash the yarn with natural soaps. After the natural dyeing session, we'll be ready to dance at the pedal looms. Here, the host and her family will teach us weaving techniques, and we'll weave alongside them! Next, we'll meet her Mom, Mireya, and savor her delicious dishes; this is where the true flavors of Zapotec cuisine shine. Enjoy your meal! For dessert, you'll indulge in a cup of delicious handmade organic chocolate. Her sister Yuli will share the chocolate tradition inspired by the wisdom of their grandmothers.

TUESDAY, APRIL 22

Today, we are in for a real treat. In fact, I found this to be a highlight of the trip. We'll be visiting a local home where Mimi (a "Master Cook of the State of Oaxaca") will give us a cooking lesson from 10-3:30. We will start by making our own sauce for an authentic Oaxacan breakfast. Oaxacan cuisine is known for its famous dishes which we will prepare as we learn about their way of eating them. We'll be involved in each process to understand the cultural meaning of each of them, as we make tortillas by hand and then cook them on the comals. After that, we'll eat what we prepared together. Traditional cuisine in Oaxaca is a cultural heritage. Come prepared eat!

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23

We have a full day planned for today. We'll go on a
1-hour nature walk/hike with a local tour guide, Rocio, for a unique experience in Hierve el Agua, one of the most stunning destinations in Oaxaca. Before the walk we will enjoy a delicious oaxaqueño breakfast prepared by a local family. Hierve el Agua is more than a natural wonder; it is a sacred site for Zapotecs, where they performed rituals in honor of the gods of rain and fertility. Here you can admire the petrified waterfalls, swim in natural pools and explore spectacular landscapes. This is a private tour, so the group can decide which sites they want to visit to end the day. Having a private guide also let's us move at our own pace without feeling rushed.
